An upright piano weighs somewhere between 400 and 800 pounds and almost all of it is concentrated in the back, which is why they tip. A gun safe is heavier per square inch than anything else that goes in a house. A pool table looks like furniture until you find out the playing surface is three slabs of slate, each one over 200 pounds, and that the frame under it is bolted rather than glued. These are the items where doing it wrong costs somebody a floor, a wall, or a back. We take them on with three people, proper straps and a plan for every doorway before anything leaves the ground.

What Is Included
Uprights, spinets and baby grands are three different jobs
A spinet or console is the lightest of the group and the one people underestimate, because it looks like furniture and it is not. An upright is heavier and top heavy, and the technique is about keeping the weight over the dolly and never letting it lean. On stairs it goes on a board with straps and one person below it at all times. Salt on a February sidewalk in Will County is the version where we bring extra runners.
A baby grand comes apart. The lid closes and locks, the pedal lyre comes off, the legs come off one at a time as the body is lowered onto a padded skid, and the whole thing travels on its side. Reassembly at the other end takes about as long as the disassembly did. It is a slower, more careful job than an upright and it is priced that way.
One thing we say to every piano customer: moving a piano knocks it out of tune. That is physics, not damage. Plan on a tuner a couple of weeks after it settles into the new room, once the humidity there has had time to do its work.
Safes and pool tables
Gun safes are dense and unforgiving. We want to know the make, the height, and roughly what it weighs before we come, and whether it is currently bolted to the slab. Empty it first, including the shelves, and take the door off if the manufacturer allows it, because on a lot of models the door is a third of the total weight. If a safe is going to a basement, we need to see the stairs, and there are safes we will look at and tell you honestly need a rigger rather than a moving crew.
Pool tables are a teardown, always. The felt comes off the rails, the rails unbolt, and the slate lifts out in sections. Slate is heavy and it is brittle at the edges, so it goes on the truck flat, padded, and never on edge. Putting it back together at the new house means leveling each slate section, and if you want the table playable rather than just present, budget for a billiards installer to recloth and level it after we set it. We will happily hand the frame off to whoever you use.
Neither of these gets dragged across a finished floor because somebody is in a hurry. If a path will not work, we stop and find another one.
Treadmills, home gyms, and what we will not move
Treadmills are the most common heavy item call we get and the easiest to plan for. Most fold, most have a deck that comes off the frame with a hex key, and most of the trouble comes from a basement stair with a turn at the bottom. Send a photo of the stairway and we will tell you before we come whether it goes as one piece or two. Weight benches, squat racks and cable towers come apart the same way, and the hardware goes back in a labeled bag.
Hot tubs we do not move. Not up a driveway, not around the side of a house, not onto a trailer. A filled or recently drained spa is several hundred pounds of shell that flexes when you lift it, and the right answer is a spa moving company with a proper dolly and a crane truck. We would rather tell you that on the phone than show up and improvise.
Same honesty on a few others. Grand pianos above a baby grand, safes over about 1,000 pounds, and anything that needs to come through a second story window are jobs for a rigger. Ask us and we will say so.

Heavy items are quoted on the piece, the floor it starts on, and the floor it is going to. These jobs run three movers, so the hourly rate is the three man rate when they are part of a larger move.

The flat $50 travel fee applies inside the core area. Nothing on this list has a hidden stair charge, but stairs do change which end of the range you land on, so a photo of the stairway helps. Pool tables need a billiards installer to recloth and level after we set the frame, and pianos should be tuned a couple of weeks after the move. No, and anyone who says otherwise is overselling. We break it down, move the slate safely, and reassemble the frame with the slate set. Getting it truly level and recloth is a billiards installer's job and it is worth paying for.
Do you move hot tubs?
No. A spa is a flexing shell weighing several hundred pounds and it needs a company with spa dollies and the right equipment. We will point you toward that rather than take a job we should not have.
